100 Vietnamese Intellectuals in Japan Gather to Exchange

100 outstanding Vietnamese intellectuals in Japan gathered at an event held on May 27 by the Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in Japan (AVIJ), under the auspices of the Vietnamese Embassy, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Ministry of Planning and Investment, VNA reported.

Attending the meeting were Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu; Bui The Duy, Alternate member of the Party Central Committee, deputy minister of Science and Technology; Vu Quoc Huy, director of the Directors of the National Innovation Center and 100 typical Vietnamese intellectuals across Japan.

In his remarks, Ambassador Pham Quang Hieu stressed that Japan has been a destination for many generations of Vietnamese to work, study and develop their career.

From 2000 to now, the number of international students in general and the Vietnamese community has continuously increased over the years, currently reaching nearly 500,000 people, becoming the second largest foreign community in Japan.

Among these are many people from the younger generation, many of whom have studied, researched, and worked in Japan for the past 15-20 years, and are now occupying important positions in teaching and research, management at prestigious universities, leading Japanese enterprises in many fields such as information technology, electronics-microchips, robotics, agriculture, healthcare, economics-law-society-human literature. Many people hold positions as Professors, Associate professors, business managers, or heads of the research lab.

Along with young intellectuals, start-up entrepreneurs and a large number of enthusiastic international students are playing a leading role in the development of the Vietnamese community in Japan, actively contributing to the development of the Vietnamese community in Japan as well as Japan’s socio-economic development, becoming a bridge for friendly cooperation between the two countries.

The diplomat stressed that the Vietnamese Party and State always pay special attention to overseas Vietnamese – an integral part of the nation – and have issued various policies and guidelines for them.

He lauded contributions by Vietnamese intellectuals, including those in Japan, to the success of such events as Vietnam Summits in 2019 and 2021, and symposiums, which attracted crowds of Vietnamese and Japanese intellectuals and businesses.

Hieu expressed his hope that the AVIJ and the intellectual community in general will produce more research studies, and make more proposals and contributions, helping Vietnam apply Japan’s cutting-edge technology in socio-economic development.

The meeting spent time actively discussing the contributions of Prof. Tran Van Tho together with 20 Vietnamese professors and associate professors in the fields of information technology, microchips, materials, healthcare, and agriculture, business, economics, who are currently teaching in universities and research institutes all over Japan; along with 15 presidents, directors, managers of Vietnamese enterprises in the fields of IT, Finance-Economics-Consulting-NPO, Business Startup.

This is the first meeting event held on a large scale, an opportunity for intellectuals all over Japan to have the opportunity to exchange, connect with scientific research networks, update and share information about activities and highlights of the intellectual network in the past time, exchange of cooperation activities in the future towards the formation of a dynamic, united Vietnamese intellectual community in Japan with increasingly effective contributions into science and technology activities, national development as well as cooperation relationship with Japan.

The 476,000-strong Vietnamese community is the second-largest foreign community in Japan, and the second-biggest community of Vietnamese in the world. The community comprises about 250,000 workers and apprentices, about 50,000 students, 60,000 engineers and about 50,000 residents. Vietnamese people, mostly youngsters, are living, working and studying in all 47 cities and provinces of Japan. They have enjoyed favourable conditions from the host government in living, studying and doing business.
