Vietnamese Community in Argentina and Japan Celebrate Lunar New Year

At the event organized by the Vietnamese Embassy in Argentina, Vietnamese expatriates in the Latin American country had the opportunity to watch a video showcasing Vietnam’s impressive socio-economic achievements and the vibrant Vietnamese culture. They were also treated to delicious traditional Vietnamese dishes as part of the Tet festival celebrations.

During the event, Vietnamese Ambassador to Argentina, Duong Quoc Thanh, emphasized the positive development of Vietnam-Argentina relations in 2023. Particularly noteworthy was the high-level visit of National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Looking ahead to 2024, there are plans for important visits by Vietnamese leaders, as well as representatives from ministries and localities, to Argentina. These visits aim to further enhance the potential for cooperation between Vietnam and Argentina.

The Vietnamese community in Argentina comprises approximately 230 individuals, with most residing in northern Argentina and the Buenos Aires province. Many members of the community had returned to Vietnam for the Tet festival.

Meanwhile, in Fukuoka prefecture, southern Japan, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka, the Vietnamese Association in Fukuoka, and the Vietnam Trade and Investment Promotion Association in the Kyushu region jointly organized the “Homeland Spring 2024” festival on January 20.

The festival commenced with the “Vietnam Ao Dai Fashion Week” on January 18. Festival attendees were able to participate in traditional Tet activities, engage in folk games, enjoy musical performances, and explore booths offering Vietnamese and Japanese cuisine as well as handicraft products.

Vuong Chi Mai, the Consul General of Vietnam in Fukuoka, highlighted the significance of 2023 in Vietnam-Japan relations, including the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties and the 15-year friendship between Hanoi city and Fukuoka prefecture. During his state visit to Japan in November, President Vo Van Thuong traveled to Fukuoka and met with representatives of the Vietnamese community in the Kyushu region.

The festival served not only as an avenue to introduce traditional Vietnamese cultural values to international friends, including the Japanese, but also as a means of strengthening bilateral understanding and friendship between Vietnam and Japan. Omagari Akie, the Vice Governor of Fukuoka, expressed her appreciation for the cooperative relationship between Fukuoka prefecture and Hanoi city, which was established in 2008. After the festival, a delegation from Fukuoka is expected to visit Hanoi, where a memorandum of understanding will be signed to further enhance bilateral cooperation.

Omagari praised the significant contributions of the Vietnamese community, the largest foreign community in Fukuoka, to the relationship between the two countries and local socio-economic development.

As part of the event, the Consulate General of Vietnam in Fukuoka presented certificates of merit from Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son to four individuals who have made effective contributions to the development of cooperation and friendship between Vietnam and Japan. The consulate also awarded certificates of merit to three groups and twelve individuals for their contributions to community service activities and the “Homeland Spring” event in Fukuoka.
